Exploring how dance artists can transform practice

The workshop made me realize the potential of improvisation. What I gained most was the ability to listen and respond more quickly. I learned to listen to my surroundings. Workshop participant 2010

This workshop in Spain has been truly inspiring, not only for my dancing but for my writing and the way I see art around me. All the improvisation experience has made me take more chances in thinking and doing. Workshop participant 2009

Overview

Now in its fourth season, this summer intensive is an opportunity for dancers and choreographers to collaborate in the beautiful Andalusia region of Spain. Directed by choreographer Lisa Naugle, this ten-day intensive is designed for dancers, improvisers, choreographers, composers and musicians from all styles who wish to develop their skills in improvisation, composition, collaboration and performance.

The workshop is limited to twenty-five participants. Working within a community of practicing artists, we will provide individual attention and feedback to each participant in relationship to his/her focus. Daily movement sessions will give all participants the necessary time and space to prepare the body and mind for creative activity. One of the highlights of this intensive is the opportunity to collaborate with composers and gain new experiences for developing creative work for public performance.

Participants will have opportunities to choreograph or create structured improvisation scores for solo, small ensemble and large group improvisation. Work may be done in collaboration with a composer in residence (see International Contemporary Festival for Composers http://www.musicanuevamalaga.com/en/index.html
